As part of the QLD/NSW Interconnector (QNI) upgrade, CPP was engaged by TransGrid as Principal Contractor to deliver major brownfield augmentation works at the Dumaresq (DMQ) and Tamworth (TA1) 330kV substations. The scope included the installation of new capacitor banks, Static VAR Compensators (SVCs), extensive auxiliary power system upgrades, and the relocation and uprating of critical transmission line infrastructure. These upgrades were essential to support voltage stability, increase network capacity, and enable future renewable energy integration.
The scope of CPP works covered the full D&C delivery, including site-specific civil works, structural steel and gantry installation, HV/LV cabling, secondary systems, testing and commissioning. Key activities included the construction of new 330kV switchbays, SVC compounds and control systems, noise and fire mitigation structures, and full replacement of legacy protection and control equipment. At both sites, CPP also worked closely with TransGrid to manage outage schedules, ensure successful energisation, and complete system integration testing with the control centre.
Delivered in a live substation environment and under challenging conditions—including the COVID-19 pandemic, extreme weather events, asbestos discoveries, and evolving outage plans – CPP maintained program integrity through agile resourcing, accelerated construction, and close stakeholder collaboration. The project was completed safely, within budget, and on time, contributing to the resilience and reliability of the NSW electricity network, and the energy transfer between QLD and NSW.
